RIDE THE WAVE, IN 10 MINUTES OR LESS

RIDE THE WAVE, IN 10 MINUTES OR LESS

In the same day, I heard 3 mentions of the phrase “ride the wave” so I’m accepting it as a sign that this is something I’m meant to be reflecting on and applying. 

The specific reasons each person used this phrase were not the same; however, they all were speaking to the same idea: we can’t control what’s coming at us, but we can decide how to respond, and hopefully surf our way through it. 

The day before, I was in a conversation that was the equivalent of complaining about the size of the wave with no mention of working through it; just a repeat of how big and harsh and unfair the wave was.

Guess which conversation left me feeling better, more hopeful, and inspired?

I don’t say this to minimize the wave. Collectively and personally everyone has been through a lot in these last few years, longer for some. And some things really are messed up. 

So what now then? Brace for the impact, or learn to surf?

If you’ve been struggling lately and feeling on the cusp or already over the edge of burnout, what’s your strategy for dealing with the Work Wave? Wait it out, hope that next week will feel less crazy? I’ve done that, don’t recommend it. 

Here’s some other things to consider that won’t take up a lot of your time:

  • Use 10 minutes today to look into next week and find opportunities to create more space for yourself, block it on the calendar or it won’t happen

  • Set a goal to end any meetings you lead 10 minutes early, pay it forward by giving others the gift of time :)

  • Have 2-3 minutes while waiting for a meeting to start? Instead of using it to play speed round with email clean up, stand up, stretch and look away from the screen then take 3 deep breaths before getting back to your game face

  • Set a reminder at the end of each day for a 5 minute reflection, jot down the most tense moments of the day and notice what contributed to that (and more importantly what part of it is within your control)

  • Be the levity you need to feel in the work day, try to make a co-worker laugh or smile in an unexpected moment

The little moments matter.
