WRITE A LETTER...AND LET IT GO

Do you have a person or thing that triggers you? 

Maybe they make you super annoyed, or mad, or sad, or frustrated…

Ever notice how the same thoughts run in your mind on auto-pilot in these moments? 

You focus on, and find, all the things you should/would/could say to this person or about a thing… 

…over, and over, and over

In those moments, does doing that ever make you feel better or help resolve the issue? 

If you’re like most people, it actually makes the issue bigger and you feel smaller

The more you let it ruminate, the more you make up ‘stories’ to fill in the gaps of what you imagine the other person to be thinking or feeling

And again, you fall down the endless spiral of feeling worse and worse 

Most times you’re not ready to talk or confront the issue or person - and that’s okay 

The good news is, there’s a trick to get this out of your brain while you decide how you want to handle it at the same time

What is it? Write a letter

Yep, we’re going old school

  1. Pull out an actual pen and paper, or a laptop (NO PHONES)

  2. Write a letter to the person or to a friend about the issue if it isn’t specific to a person

  3. Say everything you have been letting run through in your mind

  4. Read it

  5. BURN IT

 

Be honest. Be direct. The more the better, this is your chance to get it out

The magic here is that when you get it out of your head and onto paper you see the negative thoughts and conversations objectively…

…and you can detach from them

You have enough day-to-day things to think about, don’t let the negative stuff or people take up any more real estate in your mind than they already have

Write a letter to let it out. Burn it. And let it go.
